About Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta, generally known as Jogja, is a vibrant city with a wonderful mix of cultures, traditions and religions, and has some of the most tantalizing food in the world. Yogya was the centre of Hindu and Buddhist empires for centuries and was even the Indonesian capital for a period. It has endured Japanese invasion during World War II and it was the site of Dutch resistance to Indonesian independence following the Japanese withdrawal. Jogja is known both as a university town and the cultural capital of Indonesia. It is home to over 50 institutions of higher learning and is famous for its production of the arts, including Batik, Indonesian dances and wayang kulit, or leather puppet performances. The result is that Jogja is a buzzing city, and provides an ideal setting for anybody seeking a taste of Indonesia. The people are friendly and extremely welcoming and every day spent there is sure to be filled with excitement and leave you yearning for more!
