Frequently Ask Questions
What visa will I travel to Indonesia on and how long is this valid for?
We provide you with a Social Budaya visa. This enables you to stay in Indonesia for an initial two months and up to six months if you want to extend it (any extensions will be at your expense and cost approximately AUD 35).
We organize this visa by sending you sponsor letters from Indonesian Internships and your internship site (which are required for the visa), along with all the relevant forms. You then forward these on to your local consulate along with your passport for processing. The processing of your visa at the consulate is generally quite quick and the cut-off dates for applications to each of the Indonesian Internships programs ensure that you have enough time to obtain your visa before the program begins.
Who Can Participate on the Indonesian Internships Programs?
Anybody that is 18 years of age or over is welcome to apply to participate on an Indonesian Internship program.
Is there any way of getting help with the funding of my internship?
If you are a university student, then it may be possible for you to obtain a grant to help toward the expenses of your internship. We have included the details of such grants that we know about in the university specific information under "Obtaining a Credit Point for University Students". However, we have not yet had a chance to look into this at many universities so if there is nothing about a grant at your university then it is still worth while looking into it yourself.
Do I have to speak bahasa Indonesia to come on a program?
The simple answer to this is no. Knowledge of the Indonesian language is obviously useful, and opens up the range of organizations that you can work for, but it is not a necessity. We have affiliations with a number of organizations that have English speaking employees, so a placement can still be arranged.
What will I get out of going on a program?
Some of the benefits that you are likely to receive by coming on an Indonesian Internships program include:
- Making host of Indonesian contacts in your field of interest
- Meeting Australians with a shared interest in Indonesia
- Improving your bahasa Indonesia skills
- Developing your understanding of Indonesian culture and Islam
- Gaining work experience and seeing different ways of viewing and approaching your field of interest
- Having a different and memorable holiday or break from your studies
- A membership with the Australia-Indonesia Business Council and the networking opportunities that come with this.
Do I have to travel to Indonesia alone?
Indonesian Internships does not provide the service of booking flights. However, we can help you to choose a flight. And, whenever possible, we will help to ensure that you are on a flight with other participants from your program.
Will there be an opportunity to meet other people from the programs before I go?
We will help you to get in touch with other participants on your program as early as possible. We will also try to organize an opportunity to meet with a representative of Indonesian Internships prior to your departure. The format of this is quite flexible, but will be tailored to ensure that you are completely ready to go prior to the commencement of programs.
How can I keep in touch with people back home?
There a number of cheap and accessible internet cafes in Yogyakarta , meaning that you will have regular access to your email accounts. It is also possible to call home from a warung telkom, or 'wartel'. However, this is quite costly and we recommend that you organize for people to call you from home, and we can provide a landline for you to do this.
Another very cost effective method is to bring an unlocked (not locked to a local network) mobile phone with you and purchase and Indonesian SIM card when you arrive. Text messages from Indonesia to Australia are cheaper than those within Australia!
What vaccinations do I need before coming on a program?
You can get all the medical advice that you need, including the recommended vaccinations, from: www.traveldoctor.com.au.
