The Indonesian Internships Programs

Details of the Programs

Indonesian Internships programs offer the chance to travel to Yogyakarta, a cultural centre of Indonesia , and work with an Indonesian organization that matches your interests and expertise. Past participants have had an amazing time and rated their time in Yogyakarta as a life changing experience.

Where are the Programs?

The programs are held in the beautiful old city of Yogyakarta, or 'Jogja', the old capital of Indonesia. For more information on Yogyakarta, see About Yogyakarta.

When are the Programs and How Long do they go for?

You can actually choose both when to start your Indonesian Internships program and how long you work for, as long as it is at least four weeks.   However, if you would prefer to come on a program at the same time as others, then we suggest that you come on one of our two group programs each year.

Individual Programs

As mentioned above, you can tailor a program to suit your need by choosing both when you start your internship and how long you work for, provided that it is at least four weeks.

If this suits you, just choose 'Individual Program' on the Online Application Form and provide the relevant details.  Note that you do need to apply at least six weeks before you want to start your internship program, although even this is cutting it very fine, so please submit your application earlier if possible.

Group Programs

As well as being excellent fun, working in Indonesia can be quite challenging, especially if you have not spent much time there before.  Therefore, to give you the opportunity to share these experiences with others in a similar position, Indonesian Internships runs two group programs each year.  The first of these is a six-week program, held from early January until mid February and the second is a four-week program, held from early June until early July (coinciding with the mid-year university break and going one week into semester two).

The dates of upcoming group programs and the cut-off dates for applications are:

June 2009 - July 2009

Staggered start to cater for varied timing of university breaks

09 Jan 2009 - 22 Feb 2009
Apply Before: 9 May 2009 Apply Before: 15 Nov 2008

Accommodation

The accommodation will vary somewhat depending on availablity in Jogja at the time of the program.  However, we always work hard to make sure that all participants are living very near to each other.  You can also be sure that your accommodation will be clean with good security and that it will be in a safe neighbourhood.

The most popular form of accommodation among past participants is called a kost. This is like a small (one room plus bathroom) apartment and has the major advantage of giving you more privacy and independence due to the lack of restrictions there.  This is the usual form of accommodation for the thousands of university students in Jogja, so it provides an excellent opportunity for you to meet local students as well.

Another possible form of accommodation is a home stay, where you live with an Indonesian family. This has the benefit that you will not only be working with locals, but also living with them, which provides a unique insight into Indonesian culture and means that your language skills cannot help but improve!

And finally, you can stay in a losmen, the Indonesian word for hostel. These are quite similar to the kosts, except that you live among backpackers that are constantly floating through Jogja instead of living with the locals.  These are not commonly used by Indonesian Internships because we try and encourage everybody to become as deeply entrenched in the local culture as possible, but they do provide another alternative.

Obtaining Credit for University Students

Obtaining credit at a university is by no means a compulsory part of the Indonesian Internships programs, and the majority of past participants have in fact not elected to do so.  However, this is a possibility for a number of university students, and it may also be possible to obtain a student grant to contribute toward the cost of the program and the flights if you do so.  For more information, please see "Obtaining a Credit Point for University Students".
